Plan for the shape it becomes
A flat kit box may be convenient on day one and unsuitable after the first assembly step. Before starting, identify the largest intermediate shape you expect to store. Include protruding pieces and anything that cannot be removed without undoing progress. Avoid treating the kit's packaging dimensions as a reliable guide to the assembled project's storage.
Use a cardboard outline to check the intended shelf or cupboard. A fit on the shelf is only part of the question: you also need a workable way to put the project there and retrieve it. Keep the route clear and choose a location suited to the materials.
Separate support from sorting
The partially assembled object and its spare pieces have different needs. Loose parts can be grouped in suitable small containers; an assembly may need a stable support chosen for its actual shape. Do not pile loose hardware onto the project just because it all belongs to one kit.
This is a layout method, not a claim that an ordinary storage bin protects delicate models during travel. Test the storage arrangement without risking the finished work where possible. Materials that are drying, curing or otherwise changing require their own product instructions; a convenient closed box may not be appropriate.
Leave a restart note, not a mystery
Write three short lines: where you stopped, what comes next, and which parts are stored elsewhere. Add a date to your own note when it helps identify the project version. Keep the original instructions accessible and retain any labels needed to identify parts correctly.
Use one named location for paused projects and review what is actually there before starting another. If that area is full, decide which project to resume, dismantle appropriately or move to longer-term storage. Buying another box without making that decision increases storage but does not make the next session easier to begin.
