Outside tells you where it goes
The external width, depth and height help you decide whether a closed container occupies too much tabletop or fits a storage opening. Include the protrusions relevant to that position: handles, hinges, latches or a lid rim may extend beyond the main body. Check whether the seller is describing the product itself, its shipping package or a multipack.
Record measurement order explicitly. A value labeled length on one page may be described as width on another. Draw a rectangle and write the measurement along the relevant edge instead of trusting the order of three numbers.
Inside tells you what it holds
Internal dimensions describe space available to the contents, but even those need context. A tapered container can be narrower at its base. Divider channels and curved corners reduce the useful rectangle. The lid may intrude into the stated height. For a close-fitting object, ask where the measurement was taken and check a sample if possible.
Do not subtract a guessed wall thickness from exterior dimensions and present the result as a product specification. The featured box has published outside measurements; that is why our shortlist does not claim a particular assembled project will fit inside it.
Open tells you whether you can use it
A box that fits a cupboard with its lid closed may need to be removed before opening. A drawer may extend over your active project. Record the additional movement and decide whether you need that space permanently clear or can move the container for access.
For example, a hypothetical box occupying 14 × 8 inches may still be impractical behind a mat if there is nowhere for its lid to open. Our planner accepts rectangular reservations, not hinge simulations. Represent the full space you want to keep clear and inspect the real motion separately. When specifications disagree, retain the source and uncertainty rather than silently choosing the smallest number.
