Begin with a real session
Choose one project you could genuinely work on today. Put its dry materials, instructions and usual tools on the table without adding new storage. Mark the rectangle you keep returning to. This is the active work area, not the total space occupied by everything you own. Photograph or sketch the arrangement for your own reference, then clear the surface before measuring.
Record the usable width and front-to-back depth. Exclude a damaged edge, a permanently occupied corner and any area that cannot support your intended task. A nominal furniture size may include trim that is not useful tabletop. This planning exercise does not establish that a dining table is suitable for cutting, heating or other workshop work.
Measure three different states
Record the setup in use, during pack-away and in storage. A box may fit a shelf with its lid closed but need to come off the shelf before opening. A drawer cabinet can sit behind your mat while its open drawers intrude into the project. Write the closed footprint and the additional opening travel as separate measurements.
Do the same for the project itself. Flat kit pieces and an assembled model are different shapes. Measure the largest stage you expect to store, including protrusions, rather than assuming the original kit box will accommodate the finished assembly.
Try an honest example
On an illustrative 36 × 24 inch table, reserve a 7 inch rear storage band and 2 inches of front clearance. That leaves 15 inches of depth for a work surface. An 18 × 12 inch mat can fit across that depth; a 24 × 18 inch one cannot fit in that orientation. Changing the storage arrangement may help more than buying a bigger mat.
Our planner subtracts these rectangular reservations. It does not judge comfortable reach, safe clearance, load capacity or mounting. Stand or sit at a paper mock-up and check the actual motions before buying. Keep a list of the measurements you still need, rather than replacing missing values with an optimistic guess.
