List where the mat will live
A mat has to fit twice: on the work surface and in its storage location. Measure the shelf or drawer, including the path past hinges and handles. A slot that accepts the mat edge may still require it to bend while being inserted. Avoid forcing an ordinary mat into a space it was not designed to occupy.
If you can keep the appropriate mat flat in a suitable location, a folding model may solve no problem for you. If the work area is shared and storage is limited, a purpose-designed folding model is worth comparing.
Do not generalize the care instructions
OLFA's NCM-S page says that mat must be stored flat. Its FCM-12x17 is specifically described as a folding design. Neither statement is a universal instruction for all mats. Read the care guidance for the precise model, including any restrictions on storage conditions.
The folding model's advertised open size is not its complete folded storage envelope. Confirm thickness, folded measurements and any carrying arrangement before choosing a tight drawer or bag. We have not measured the featured mat or tested how its fold feels during use.
Compare a complete session
Make a list of the steps involved in retrieving, placing, using and putting away each option. An alternative that fits storage but complicates the workpiece layout may not be the better choice. Also confirm intended cutter compatibility independently of the size comparison.
