Count categories before containers
Separate the items you truly need to distinguish. For fasteners, that might include type, size and thread specification already known from their packaging. For model supplies, it could be connectors, wheels and current-kit accessories. Do not guess a technical specification from appearance; retain the original identifying information.
List one category per line. If two items can be confused in a way that affects the project, give them separate labeled homes. If a category contains just one unusually large object, record its size rather than assuming a standard small drawer will work.
Reserve space for change deliberately
Imagine 11 active categories, 3 larger groups and 2 empty locations kept for the next project. That is a plan for 16 locations, but not necessarily a plan for a 16-small-drawer cabinet. The larger groups may require a different container. Drawer count and usable drawer geometry answer different questions.
A divider can create extra locations only when it fits the correct drawer and suits the items. Check how many dividers are supplied rather than reading the cabinet's maximum possible subdivisions as included capacity. Do not buy a much larger cabinet simply to store a large stock of hypothetical future purchases.
Run a trial inventory
Use temporary labels on existing containers and work with the arrangement for a few sessions. Record the categories you repeatedly mix, cannot find, or have to split. This provides a practical shopping brief: for example, eight narrow groups and two bulky groups, rather than a vague wish for more organization.
Leave location codes stable when quantities change. A bin can be nearly empty without needing a new label. Review the map when the category no longer earns its space, and keep uncertain or unidentified items separately until you can establish what they are.
